When We Wear the Wrong Clothes
Read: Deuteronomy 22:5
5 A woman shall not wear a man’s apparel, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment; for whoever does such things is abhorrent to the Lord your God.
Today’s Word from the Weary Wilderness: …whoever does such things is abhorrent to the Lord your God. (Deuteronomy 22:5)
Reflection: This one seems trivial, as Jesus himself even encouraged us in the Sermon on the Mount not to worry about our bodies, or what we will wear. (Matthew 6:25) To him, the body was certainly more than clothing. But here in the Wilderness, what we wear does seem to matter a great deal. Why do you think this was important to the people in the Wilderness? How important is it to you today? When you look around at people you meet, is what they wear important to you? Why or why not?
Prayer: God of the Weary Wilderness, sometimes we are concerned with our bodies and with what we wear. Help us to understand what is most important about these daily concerns. We want to be found pleasing in your sight, not abhorrent. Guide us in these matters, especially when we are tempted to judge someone by the clothing they wear. Amen.
