Words from the Weary Wilderness - Lenten Journey Day 32

Day Thirty-Two Thursday, April 7
Wages Must Be Paid Promptly
Read: Deuteronomy 24:14-15
14 You shall not withhold the wages of poor and needy laborers, whether other Israelites or aliens who reside in your land in one of your towns. 15 You shall pay them their wages daily before sunset, because they are poor and their livelihood depends on them; otherwise they might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt.
Today’s Word from the Weary Wilderness: You shall not withhold… (Deuteronomy 24:14)
Reflection: We continue to speak of business practices. This one is about how we treat not only our fellow citizens, but also how we treat those who come from other lands. Notice the addition of those persons in verse 14. Many employers wait until the last possible moment to pay their employees, keeping their funds in their own accounts for as long as possible. Scripture guides us to share more equitably, so that no one might go home hungry while waiting for payday. How do you see these fair practices worked out in your church? In your community? At your own place of employment?
Prayer: God of the Weary Wilderness, you are lovingly meddling into our business practices. Help us to see that you are a champion of justice. You want all persons to have food to eat and a home in which to rest. Help us also to be champions of justice, too. Amen.
Blessings of Peace and Health,
